Bass House, Liquatech, Post-Dubstep, Future Jungle..Complextro..seems there’s a new dance music genre every season.
So where does modern Bass Music come from?
You could rewind back to late 60’s-70’s Jamaica, Sound System and Dancehall culture,18” Sub Woofers, King Tubby’s pioneering Dub experiments etc, but I’m picking up the story just after the mid 80s’ in both Miami and Chicago.
This is the story of Bass, Bleeps and Breaks between 1986 and 1992.
The evolution of a post Disco-Electro-HipHop-Industrial home produced sound that fused analogue drum machines, synthesisers, sampling, sped up funk breakbeats, MC’s toasting on the mic and snippets of Reggae and Dancehall anthems.
And in particular I wanted to find the first record that used a Roland TR808 Kick drum melodically to play full Bass parts as I do in some of my Liquatech productions and remixes.
I reckon the Miami Bass classic by Dynamix II - Just Give The DJ A Break is one of the earliest uses of melodic 808 Kick Bass. (Feel free to contribute other suggestions!)

It’s mostly chronological with two exceptions.
Future Sound Of London sampled the Sub Bass part in Meat Beat Manifesto’s ‘Radio Babylon’ in their own anthem ‘Papua New Guinea’ - just made sense to have them in that order.
Similarly, LTJ Bukem’s ‘Demon’s Theme’ uses the snare from A Guy Called Geralds ‘28 Gun Badboy’ (amongst other absolute classic samples…)
These are all stone cold Bass Anthems by true Electronic Music Pioneers.

From Minor Syndicate, label-mate on Rogue, comes this truly interesting project, the Defector Series. Basically, he’s taken a wildly imaginative story (which he’s crafting on the fly, no less!) and melding it with experimental techno music. I may be overstating it, but I found it mad intriguing. See what he has to say:

“About The Music:
Defector is a character born of some wayward portion of my imagination;
Born in Sri Lanka to military journalists and raised in Brooklyn Heights, Defector Baron Simms works as a photographer for the World News Agency, and has an insatiable appetite for curious people and close calls.
Part 1 finds Defector in Portugal, attempting to capture on film the exchange of what he was told to be black-market weapons from a known dealer named Alfrens Milla. When he arrives outside Barragem do Vilar, he learns of what threatens to be an even greater story: the sale of a small but powerful “nave especial”, or spaceship, built by Milla and capable of carrying a single man into orbit without subscription to any launch sequence or airspace clearance.
Naturally, Defector sets up for what he believes will be the shot of his life, only to be snatched up by Milla’s henchmen. Part 1 of Defector’s Journeys begins and ends here, with Defector pleading with Mlla’s right-hand man- er- woman, Bastida to be set free. In “The Proposal, Defector can be heard feebly reassuring Bastida, “I would never give you up!”…

In classic GuyGerber style, One Day In May showcases a heady mix of sounds with dazzling execution. Guy Gerber, originally from Tel-Aviv Israel, has long been a wildly prolific artist delivering anthemic releases on labels such as Cocoon and Cadenza as well as own imprint Supplement Facts that he set up in 2006. Guy is working on his new album project due to be released later this year, the Steady EP will drop on Supplement Facts in May and an entry into the illustrious fabric compilation hall of fame is set for June. Mr. Guy Gerber is well and truly back to blow your mind in 2012.

This thursday we go deep with a wonderful remix performed by Tale Of Us and DJ Tennis. The duo Tale of Us and DJ tennis met in Milan and are now both working on the label Life & Death based in Italy. The label founded by Manfredi Romano (Aka Tennis) has a real peculiar concept, indeed the music in most cases hovers around a dark pop and house approach with a definite psychedelic sensibility. The least we can say is that they have really good Djs and exquisit taste. The track has not be released yet but you can almost be certain that it will be soon. Enjoy this gorgeous remix with those amazing vocals performed by Fink. AMAZING VOCALS
